Does it bother anybody that even though we watched Jupiter take a series of asteroid hits a few years back, and that we've just found evidence of an asteroid/asteroid collision, and that it seems like we almost monthly watch an asteroid pass across Earth's orbit, but NASA's going to have canceled the program to replace the Shuttle? It seems to me to be pretty clear that we need to have increased capabilities, rather than retrenching.

Reminds me, in a vague way, of the Chinese, after sending out fleets of giant junks to explore the Pacific Rim and into the Indian Ocean, completely backing away and ignoring the rest of the world until those damn Europeans came and forced themselves onto the Middle Kingdom...
