On the topic of Yiddish, since I went there earlier, once upon a time, I knew that my father spoke Yiddish, so when forestcats and I went to the LA Times Festival of Books at UCLA (years ago), we found a copy of The Cat in the Hat in Yiddish, and I thought Dad would enjoy reading the book to his grandkids.

Unfortunately, when I gave it to him, Dad told me that he could only speak it, typically to his (then-deceased) parents. He'd never learned to read it.

I'm still embarrassed...
