Last night I finished reading the first of Harry Turtledove's Crosstime Traffic novels, Gunpowder Empire. The writing is somewhat simplistic, but he does a very good job of comparing a civilization in which the Roman Empire never fell, to our present one, and he presents his reasons why it ends up that way very well. It was a quick, entertaining read.

The only one of those I've read is the fifth one, The Gladiator, but I think you'd enjoy it as much as I did - in it, Crosstime Traffic fights Communism (in a future where the USSR won the Cold War) with ... board games!
