At home for the last several weeks, both my wife and I have been putting time into the backyard, with yesterday evening being the first deadline, because we hosted the Havurah again. forestcats really pushed hard to get it done the way she wanted it to be, and so by the time I got home from work, it looked amazing. She also baked fresh challah, and did the grocery shopping. She's astonishing. Not to mention, exhausted.

Our friends showed up, over a dozen, and I ran services. I tried to be reasonably quick, so as to get right to cooking, because we had kosher hamburgers waiting to be put on the new grill that we'd built a few weekends previously. As it turned out, I'm going to have to do a bit more to maximize the grill use, but it has two more burners, and lots more grill space than my older model. I suspect that we'll be looking at having to set it up with lava stones, because the direct heat doesn't get as hot as I'd like for quick cooking of certain meats.

We also lit the firepit, and so s'mores were made. All things done, I cleaned things up, and we collapsed in the den after our friends departed.

My beloved rapidly fell asleep on the couch, but I couldn't doze off; therefore I explored Google Earth on my laptop, dropping pins in all the places I'd lived before, including the site of the 1972 Los Angeles Hebrew High Ulpan to Israel, where I spent the summer in an Israeli agricultural youth village. It's cool to see these places in bird's eye views...

The word derives from the same base root as a word for friend, and I may be spelling it wrong in English, though it's a transliteration. It basically means a group of people who in a friendly fashion do a variety of things together, especially Jewish activities, but not exclusively.

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco...
