I finally finished reading Crucible of Gold by Naomi Novik, the latest of the Temeraire books. If you haven't read them, they are a re-write of the Napoleonic Wars with the addition of aerial combat in which the armies have dragons as well as navies, armies, cannons, and so forth. In this one there's reconciliation, shipwreck, exploration of a continent, and repatriation of captives. I especially like the symbiosis between the dragons and their people. If you haven't read any of the series, I recommend you start at the beginning, rather than with this book, which, IIRC, was His Majesty's Dragon.

I'm glad you liked them. I'm recommending them to my brother, who has more time/inclination to reading long books than I do.

A perhaps little-known fact about the author is that she started as -- and to a small extent still participates in -- fanfic writing.
