I was listening to some NPR show one evening recently, and I heard an actor talking about his time in college. I was gobsmacked. See, he admitted that he had no knowledge at all about any classics of literature or the humanities; his degree, in fact, insisted that all of his work be in the Theater Arts department, so he had no breadth at all! I was amazed at first, but then I realized that here and there in my experience, I've come across people who were so specialized in their training, be it theater or engineering or even medicine, that outside their work, they knew little or nothing. Being that I've tried to be as broad as I can be in what I learn, I could only shake my head in amazement at this revelation.
