Dead Dog Cat

(no subject)

Memorial Day Weekend, we spent it up in San Jose visiting friends, and on Sunday we took a stroll at a farmer's market...good stuff, too. Anyway, the site included a used book store, and I ended up picking up several books.

One of them I started to read right away, and finished last night. It was Tiki Road Trip: A Guide to Tiki Culture in North America which I know sounds kind of hokey, but I have a good friend who's put together a Tiki bar on his roof sundeck, and it's a very cool thing, so I didn't bother trying to resist doing a bit of research.

The author, James Teitelbaum, published this in 2003, and he not only lists Tiki bars all over North America, but mentions several off this continent. Not only bars, too, but also motels, restaurants and a variety of other things. He missed the Mission Tiki Drive-in just up the street here in my hometown, but it's barely Tiki in any way so I'll try not to quibble. He also lists a number of lost Tiki places..a sadness.

I found it a fun read with a hint of nostalgia, and in reality several places he describes still exist, according to Yelp. Now that I'm done, I can't wait to pass it on to my friend who's built the Tiki bar!
