In the last day or so I finished reading two books.

First was Caribbean Rum: A Social and Economic History which really reads like a dissertation. It was pretty dry, packed with charts, and something like a third of the pages were various attributions. It wasn't lighthearted, it wasn't cheerful and it wasn't fun. OTOH, if you're looking for quotes for a research paper, have a go!

Next, I stayed up way too late reading this one well into the night to finish it; Skin Games by Jim Butcher, the latest novel of the Dresden Files. For those of you not in the know, this series of books and stories are about a wizard for hire who lives in Chicago, and who defends his turf from paranormal invasions. This isn't a standalone book, so to really enjoy it you'll have to have read the previous bunches of books, but this one was fun, and hung together very well. What you'd call a pageturner, for sure, or else I wouldn't have been up far beyond the witching hour. In this one, Harry Dresden is forced to help someone demonic invade the treasure hall of Hades to recover The Holy Grail. Nice. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

And so the new week starts...
