I was called to jury duty, yesterday, and like a good citizen, I showed up on time.

I live in San Bernardino County; each county's rules regarding jury duty differ. When I lived in Los Angeles County, you reported daily for a week and waited and waited and waited. In my present county, it's one day, one case. So hundreds of us lined up for the security check (where they even had me remove my belt???) and filled all the ridiculously uncomfortable chairs...every single one.

I sat for about three hours, give or take, and then my group was informed that our case had settled before we were to be empaneled, so we were excused from further duty, and I went to work.

I feel so ... American!

Here you are assigned a number and given a phone number to call every night after 6pm. If your number comes up, you report the next day. If you get through the whole week without having to report, you have still fulfilled your requirement.

We're actually required to call in the night before after 5PM to find out if you even report, but obviously I had to turn up. I await the advent of email access to your jury summons.

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco...
