I just finished (while I waited for the screen to refresh) another book from the library, called Rum: A Social and Sociable History of the Real Spirit of 1776, which postulates that the reason that the US broke from the British Empire was due to the economics of rum. The author makes a pretty good case for it, as well as discussing the history of rum before and after the War. Nice read.
